Question – when is an Aster not an Aster? When it’s a Symphyotrichum!
Formerly a very large group in the Asteraceae family, the flower which we know as Aster has been reclassified into another genus, Symphyotrichum (pronounced sim-fy-oh-TRY-kum) Not a name that rolls off the tongue, so this pretty, versatile flower is still generally referred to by its common names of September flower or Michaelmas daisy.

Using Asters in Floral Design
Aster is such a useful flower in floristry; full length it will fill out and add height and a delicate frothiness to large venue designs and as such, is a lovely flower for weddings. When cut into smaller pieces Aster will soften bolder, more solid blooms in hand-tied bouquets or funeral arrangements. Even the smallest side stems can be of use, keep them in a small vase for adding into natural buttonholes and sprays on funeral letters.
