Cellophane, every flower shop uses it, but here are a few things you may not know about it:

ree

  • It was invented by Swiss scientist Jacques Brandenberger in the 1900’s.

  • It was the world’s first see through packaging material and was initially used as a wrapper for sweets in 1912.

  • It is a plant-based material.

That last fact is true, it may not look or feel like it, but cellophane in its purest form is biodegradable as it is made from natural products, mainly wood. So, although it can’t be recycled it can go to landfill.

But…the problem with cellophane used by florists is that it has almost certainly been upgraded or enhanced in some way, patterns added, brand names printed on it, frosting, strengthening, waterproofing, all of which require the addition of chemicals, which in turn make it non-biodegradable.
