Five years ago, we launched our original Big Green Plan with 22 ambitious targets designed to drive more responsible manufacturing, reduce our environmental impact, and strengthen accountability across our operations. As we reflect on that journey, we’re incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made together. To date, 15 of those targets have been achieved or exceeded, with meaningful progress delivered across every goal.

Since 2021, we’ve made significant changes to how we operate. We’ve reduced the use of virgin plastic in our manufacturing processes by 81%, far surpassing our original target of 50%, and we’ve removed shrink wrap from our retail-packed product range. We’ve also achieved zero waste to landfill, supported by improved recycling streams and energy recovery solutions. These milestones represent more than operational improvements, they reflect the commitment of our team and the ongoing support of our partners, suppliers, and customers.

Innovation has played a key role in this progress, particularly with the launch of OASIS® Renewal® Floral Foam in September 2025. Manufactured at our site in Washington, Tyne & Wear, this pioneering product is made using renewable, plant-based materials and delivers a 56% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional floral foam, without compromising on the performance that floral designers rely on. It’s a clear example of how we’re working to balance sustainability with quality and functionality.

Paul Southwick, Managing Director of Smithers‑Oasis UK, commented:

“It’s hard to believe that five years have passed since we launched our original Big Green Plan. I am incredibly proud of the impact the plan has had and there has been a lot of great work from our talented team at Smithers-Oasis UK. Now it’s about looking ahead again, and we remain committed to learning, developing and continuously improving our practices and operations, all with the intention of creating a sustainable future for everyone connected to our business.”

Looking ahead, The Big Green Plan 2030 sets out a clear path forward, built around an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework that allows us to take a more holistic approach to sustainability. Our environmental commitments focus on reducing waste, lowering our carbon footprint, and continuing to evolve our product range with sustainability in mind from the very beginning through to end-of-life. Alongside this, we remain focused on supporting employee wellbeing, education, and engagement across our business, while strengthening our approach to ethical sourcing, transparency, and accountability.

As we move towards 2030, we remain committed to continuous improvement and open communication. We’ll be sharing annual updates so our progress can be tracked transparently, ensuring we stay accountable to our goals and to the wider community connected to our business. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we’re excited about what comes next as we continue working towards a more sustainable future.
