What Happens at the end of a Vehicle Lease?

What should I know about the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide?

The BVRLA’s Fair Wear and Tear Guide outlines the condition a vehicle must be returned in at the end of a lease agreement. It is accepted industry-wide and applies to several aspects of a lease vehicle.

It is worth noting that ‘Fair Wear and Tear’ refers to expected level of deterioration to a vehicle from daily usage. The difference between this and damage, for example, is that the latter is normally caused by a collision or harsh treatment.

As a leasing customer you’ll need to make sure your vehicle is maintained and serviced to meet the manufacturer’s guidelines as well as following the above guide. This should help prevent any unwelcome, end of lease damage charges.

A Fair Wear & Tear Guide checklist

  • Making sure your servicing is up to date – look at your service logbook.

  • Checking your tyre tread meets the legal requirements.

  • Making sure you still have all the sets of keys and documentation that were supplied with the vehicle - e.g. the handbook, MOT certificate (if applicable) and service records.

  • Making sure the exterior has nothing more than minor surface damage.
