Many of you will be enjoying the warm weather by heading to the seaside or firing up the barbecue – but while hot weather can be enjoyable, it also brings health risks.

At HMCA, we encourage our members to stay informed and take practical steps to protect their wellbeing.
Hot weather can place strain on the body and may lead to:
Dehydration
Overheating, which can worsen existing medical conditions
Heat exhaustion or heatstroke
Older adults and people with underlying health conditions are particularly vulnerable and may require additional care and monitoring.[1]
Recognising symptoms early is essential. According to NHS health guidance[2], common signs include:
Dizziness or fainting
Headaches
Heavy sweating
Muscle cramps
Fatigue or unusual tiredness
Nausea
Intense thirst
Taking simple precautions can significantly reduce risk during hot weather[3]:
Exercise during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening
Keep sun-facing rooms shaded by closing curtains or blinds
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and limiting alcohol intake
Wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses
Apply sunscreen regularly and reapply throughout the day
By recognising the early signs of heat-related illness and taking preventative action, you can enjoy the warmer weather safely.
