Mother’s Day Gifts: Simple Spring Inspiration

Supermarkets will be full of prewrapped cellophane bunches and bouquets for Mother’s Day at all price points and in all colours. Easy for the shopper to pick up but distinctly lacking in originality. This is where florists’ have the advantage of being able to design not only bespoke gifts but wrap flowers and plants far more inventively and creatively to suit individual tastes and budgets.

That being said, Mother’s Day is not the occasion to be spending lots of time on complicated gift wrapping, but the good news is that with just three simple ingredients, craft paper, twine and a roll of fabric ribbon, even the humblest bunch of daffodils can be transformed.

Why not use poly ribbon?

Satin, silk or gingham ribbon is easy to tie, stylish and far more ecofriendly than poly ribbon. As it is much more likely to be kept and re-used, you also need less of it. Keep a selection in the shop for customers to choose from.

How to elevate your wrapping

There is a simplicity to brown paper and ribbon, especially when used with a bunch of single colour flowers. This is one to wrap at the time of purchase, so that the paper stays dry.

Deliver some sunshine by coordinating coloured craft paper with the flowers, such as these cheerful bright yellow daffodils.

Spring flowers can be pre-wrapped ready to go just by securing a band of paper around the stems. This keeps the wrapping dry and is just the right size for small hands looking for something for mum.

Small pots of spring flowers such as hyacinths or tulips can be wrapped in craft paper or even sturdy paper bags which will work just as well. Secure with twine or ribbon to create an inexpensive gift that will appeal to children.

Floristry Tips from Su Whale

Wrapping is not always necessary. Sometimes, all that is needed is a finishing flourish of a bow. This is not something your customer will be able to pick up from a supermarket!

How lovely to receive a colourful, scented spring design in a plain white ceramic jug decorated with coordinating satin ribbon.

Florists tip: Use glue dots to keep the ribbon in place.
