The Importance of Planted Arrangements

If you've been a florist for any length of time, (like me!), you'll know that there are some jobs that simply make you smile. For me, creating planted arrangements is one of them.

Of course, I absolutely love working with fresh flowers. There's nothing quite like unpacking the morning delivery, seeing buckets full of beautiful flowers and imagining what they'll become. We all create bouquets for birthdays, wedding flowers full of romance, sympathy tributes that say what words often can't, and everyday arrangements that brighten someone's day. But every now and then, it's nice to slow the pace, put the gloves on, get the compost out, line up a selection of plants and containers, and spend a little time creating something that will continue to grow long after it leaves the shop.

I find that there is something incredibly satisfying about it. When the trays of plants arrive from the supplier, when I had my retail shop, I used to genuinely look forward to unpacking them. I'd organise my bench, choose a selection of containers, have the compost ready at my feet and then simply create. I found making planted arrangements almost therapeutic. It's one of those jobs that allows you to be creative without feeling rushed, and before you know it, several beautiful designs are ready to head off to their new homes. This was particularly my happy place a week before Mother’s Day!

For me, planted arrangements are much more than simply popping a few plants into a container. Every plant is chosen for a reason. Height, texture, leaf shape, colour and growing habits all play an important part. Just as we carefully select flowers that complement each other in a bouquet, the same thought process applies when creating a successful planted arrangement. The plants need to look good together, but they also need to thrive together.

Choosing varieties with similar watering and light requirements is just as important as choosing colours that sit beautifully alongside one another. One of the biggest advantages of offering planted arrangements is their longevity. Whilst we all know and appreciate the fleeting beauty of fresh flowers, planted designs continue to evolve. Given the right care, they can last for months and often for years, becoming part of someone's home or workplace rather than a gift that is enjoyed for just a week or two.

Customers are increasingly looking for gifts that offer lasting value, and planted arrangements tick so many boxes.

Many customers also appreciate that, unlike cut flowers, planted arrangements can often be refreshed rather than replaced completely. As plants mature, they can be repotted, divided or swapped for new varieties while keeping the original container and overall design. It's a wonderful way of extending the life of the gift and making it feel even more worthwhile.

Sustainability is something that many of our customers are thinking about far more than they did a few years ago. As florists, we all know that fresh flowers remain at the heart of what we do, and rightly so, but offering planted arrangements gives customers another environmentally conscious option. Many containers can be reused time and time again. Ceramic bowls, baskets, wooden planters and decorative troughs all lend themselves perfectly to repeated use. Customers love the fact that they are investing in something that doesn't simply get thrown away.

As florists, this also opens the door to repeat business. Customers can return season after season to have their containers refreshed with new plants, creating an ongoing relationship rather than a one-off sale. From a business perspective, planted arrangements can become a valuable addition to your product range.

One area that is often overlooked is offering a professional plant care service.

Think about your commercial customers. Offices, hotels, restaurants, reception areas, care homes and healthcare settings all benefit enormously from well-maintained indoor plants. They soften interiors, create a welcoming atmosphere and bring life into spaces that might otherwise feel rather clinical.

Many businesses want beautiful plants but simply don't have the time or confidence to care for them properly. This presents a fantastic opportunity. If you're considering introducing a plant maintenance service, think carefully about the different levels of support you could offer. Some customers may simply require monthly visits, while others may benefit from a more comprehensive service that includes watering, feeding, pruning, replacing tired plants and refreshing containers throughout the year.

As with any professional service, make sure you have clear terms and conditions, written agreements and, most importantly, knowledgeable staff who understand plant care. Offering excellent aftercare not only builds trust but also strengthens long-term customer relationships.

Plants have become far more fashionable in recent years, and thankfully this trend shows no sign of slowing down. We all know that surrounding ourselves with greenery simply makes us feel better. Research continues to suggest that indoor plants can help create a calming environment, improve our mood and encourage us to reconnect with nature. While no plant can magically solve life's problems, there's certainly something comforting about caring for a living thing and watching it grow.

Perhaps that's one reason planted arrangements make such meaningful gifts.

Whether someone is celebrating a new home, welcoming a new baby, marking a retirement or sending sympathy, a planted arrangement continues to tell the story long after the occasion has passed.

Just as we refresh our flower displays with the changing seasons, planted arrangements can evolve throughout the year, giving customers fresh inspiration every time they visit the shop. Some customers adore the clean simplicity of contemporary designs featuring architectural plants in sleek ceramic containers. Others prefer a softer cottage garden feel with flowing foliage, flowering plants and rustic baskets.

The beauty of planted arrangements is that there are very few rules. They can be traditional, modern, colourful, minimalist or wonderfully wild. They allow every florist to develop their own signature style while still working within good design principles.

Of course, fresh flowers will always be at the heart of our profession. But I do believe planted arrangements deserve a much bigger place in many florist businesses than they often receive.

  • They offer longevity.

  • They encourage repeat custom.

  • They appeal to environmentally conscious customers.

  • They provide opportunities for additional services.

  • And perhaps most importantly, they're simply enjoyable to create.

Sometimes, in the middle of a busy week filled with orders, phone calls and deliveries, spending an hour creating planted arrangements reminds us why we fell in love with working with plants in the first place. As florists, we don't just sell flowers and plants. We help people celebrate, remember, comfort and connect with nature.
