Could your Florist Business Help a Survivor of Modern Slavery Take her Next Step?

Strength & Stem is a London-based charity and social enterprise that uses floristry to empower female survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking.

Each year, 15 women take part in its trauma-informed programme, combining introductory floristry training, personal development, mentoring and supported work experience. The charity is currently looking for welcoming florists who could help participants practise their skills in a real workplace, build confidence and gain valuable experience for their CV.

Before beginning a placement, participants complete 12 days of training: six days of practical floristry and six days focused on personal development and preparation for the workplace. Their floristry training includes hand-tied bouquets, vase and table arrangements, wired techniques, installations and contract flowers.

The ideal placement involves hosting one or two participants for 12 days over six weeks, usually from around 10am–3pm. However, Strength & Stem understands the pressures of running a flower business and can offer flexible arrangements. Florists can host one participant, spread the days over a longer period, offer occasional placement days or contribute four or more days alongside another placement provider.

Placement activities could include conditioning flowers, making bouquets, preparing for events or installations, assisting with contract flowers, and completing other appropriate day-to-day floristry tasks.

Florists receive comprehensive support, including a named Strength & Stem contact, a short safeguarding induction, a site visit and risk assessment, a funded Basic DBS check for the main contact, participant information and regular check-ins.

Participants may initially be nervous or require instructions to be explained gently, but they bring creativity, resilience and a genuine desire to learn and contribute. For some women, this may be their first experience of a safe UK workplace. A warm welcome and patient encouragement can make an enormous difference.

Strength & Stem is currently seeking placements that can begin between now and 2 November 2026 or starting from August 2027, particularly with florists in locations that participants can reasonably travel to from London.
