Is it a Pumpkin a Gourd or a Squash? Pumpkins, gourds and squashes are all part of the same family, Cucurbitaceae, a large group of more than 900 species that also includes melons and cucumbers.

Pumpkins are technically a squash, just like a butternut, characterised by having a thick, hard skin, which is typical of a winter squash; this differentiates them from soft-skinned summer squashes such as courgettes.
However, just to confuse matters, some people say that pumpkins can also be classified as gourds! Either way, they are integral to autumnal arrangements and autumn, especially October, just wouldn’t be the same without them.
