UK employment law protects workers from unfair treatment by regulating pay, discrimination, leave, dismissal and health & safety, primarily through key acts like the Employment Rights Act 1996, Equality Act 2010, and the Employment Rights Act 2025 (effective from late 2025/2026 with phased changes including day-one unfair dismissal rights, enhanced sick pay, and zero-hours contract reforms).
It ensures fair employer-employee relations, provides tribunal remedies, grants stronger protections to employees than workers or self-employed individuals, and enforces basic health & safety rights (know hazards, participate in safety, refuse unsafe work) under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act — helping employers stay compliant and avoid legal risks.

It is essential that, as an employer, you are knowledgeable about employment legislation and laws. There are several acts and laws that protect employees' and workers' wellbeing in the workplace. Let’s look at what employment law covers, as well as the reasons for it to exist in the first place.
