Summer Seasonal Flower - Astrantia

A cottage garden classic, Astrantia has tiny, star-shaped flowers surrounded by a ruff of colourful petals. Their slim, wiry stems project a delicate appearance, but they are actually quite sturdy and long-lasting as a cut flower.

Commonly known as Great Masterwort, or Hattie’s pincushion, as the centre of the flower looks not dissimilar to pins stuck into a cushion, although who Hattie was remains a mystery. Hollow stemmed, they are in the Apiaceae family, alongside Angelica, Ammi and Anethum.

How to buy Astrantia

Although it can be ordered throughout most of the year, it’s at its best in the summer months, when from June to September it can also be sourced from UK growers.

Wholesale, Astrantia is available in batches of 25 or 50 stems, with an option to buy mixed colours in bulk. Stem length is typically between 40cm - 70cm.

Colour Range: Creamy white, pale pink, dark pink and crimson.

Care & conditioning as a cut flower

• Ideal temperature range: 8-10°C.

• Re-cut stems using scissors or a sharp knife.

• Never leave out of water for longer than is necessary.

• Keep out of direct heat and sunlight.

• Handle with care as heads can shatter.

• Change water and re-cut stems every three to four days. Add flower food.

Using Astrantia in wedding and design work

This is a lovely textural flower for naturally styled bridal tieds and simple table designs. Not ideal for floral foam, it will last the longest when arranged in water. Astrantia can be wired for buttonholes and corsages, but handle with care and ensure that the flower is fully hydrated before use.
