Spring Flowers Conditioning Guide 


Who doesn’t love spring flowers? A welcome sight at the gloomiest time of year, it is currently peak time for these seasonal beauties, so here is an ‘At a Glance Guide’ of caring and conditioning our most popular spring flowers. 


Anemone 

  • Temperature: Cool, approximately 2°C.  

  • Susceptible to bacteria so ensure all vases and containers are clean before use.  

  • Place in shallow water which should be topped up daily.  

  • Display in a cool spot with good air circulation. 

  • Soft Anemones can be revived by submerging them briefly in cold water. 




Hyacinth 

  • Image Temperature: 2-5°C.  

  • Hyacinth are harvested with some of the bulb still attached, take a slice off this with a sharp knife, but don’t remove it altogether.  

  • Rinse the stems before placing in clean, fresh water which should be changed every day.  

  • Prolonged storage in cool conditions will reduce its fragrance. 

  • Some people are allergic to Hyacinth, wash hands, tools and workbench after handling.  


Muscari 

  • Image Temperature: 2-5°C.  

  • The short, soft stems of Muscari need to be cut carefully with sharp scissors. 

  • Place in a vase of a suitable size, making sure they are not overcrowded. 

  • Change water every other day. 

  • Wilting flowers can be revived by briefly submerging in tepid water.

Narcissus 

  • Temperature: 2-5°C.  

  • Narcissus that arrive dry can be left for 3-5 days out of water in cool temperatures (around 1°C) 

  • Once cut, stand them in water for 24 hours to allow their sap, which is toxic to other flowers, to drain out before using in designs. 

  • Always wash tools and hands after use. 



Ranunculus 

  • Temperature: 2-10°C.  

  • Use sharp scissors to re-cut the hollow, soft stems of Ranunculus.  

  • Leave in their wrapping when first conditioning to stop them from curving.  

  • Remove as much foliage as possible that will be in contact with water. 

  • Change vase water every 1-2 days.  

  • If they become top heavy, insert a wire into their stem for support. 



Tulip 

  • Temperature: 2-5°C.  

  • Re-cut stems and stand in water, leaving the wrapping on for at least an hour before use.  

  • Cut away any white parts at the bottom of the stem as they will not take up water.  

  • Tulips are thirsty flowers, check water levels daily. 

  • Change water every 2-3 days, re-cutting stems each time.
