Understanding Flower Ripeness

In the three plus decades since I started my training in floristry, the way we buy flowers has changed hugely. Gone are the days of the large Flying Dutchman lorries pulling up outside shops; oh how I loved climbing the steps into that Aladdin’s cave to choose that week’s flowers.



Now florists are more likely to be in front of a laptop or on their phone choosing from the vast array of flowers available on the online Dutch web shops. Maybe not quite as romantic but without a doubt it is a quick, slick, cost-effective way to buy.


However, to buy successfully florists now need to learn skills that have previously belonged to wholesale flower buyers. These don’t seem to be taught alongside any college or private course but surely flower buying is one of the basic skills we all need to master.
