September from the Artisan Grower

UK grown flowers are still in the spotlight, with some fabulous flowers and foliage to tempt both florists and consumers. One of the great joys of buying from UK commercial and artisan growers is the seasonality, and for many, autumn is one of the most exciting times to buy. So what flowers can you expect from your local grower this September?

Symphyotrichum ericoides

Delicate, pretty aster will complement bolder autumn flowers, such as dahlia and chrysanthemum. A versatile colour, touches of purple will highlight gold and red and are equally at home in lighter, pastel shades.

When available from UK growers: August- September.

Colours: Pale purple, pink, white.

Vase Life: 7 days.

Mentha spicata

Not only does mint add an aromatic scent to bouquets, but it is also a reliable filler, its fresh green foliage acting as a foil to more colourful flowers. Long-lasting, it is great value for money.

When available from UK growers: June – September.

Colours: Green foliage, white flower spike.

Vase Life: 10 - 14 days.

Rudbeckia

Also known as black-eyed Susan or orange coneflower, this cheerful bloom will add a pop of bright colour to bouquets with its charming, daisy-like flower. Perfect for informal, natural hand-tieds and country weddings.

When available from UK growers: July – October.

Colours: Yellow, orange, red and brown.

Vase Life: 5- 7 days.

Salvia viridis

Scented foliage and a cottage garden look, salvia will add line to designs with its slim spikes of purple/blue flowers. Reliable and more robust than it looks.

When available from UK growers: July – October.

Colours: Purple, dark blue.

Vase Life: 7-14 days.

Verbena bonariensis

Very versatile, verbena can be used in both hand-tieds and arrangements, it is particularly effective when added to taller flowers such as helichrysum and gladioli.
